This is the first song of an 11-song album called Love Will Carry Us, which explores the journey from suffering to redemption. Prodigal Son sets the stage for the journey and points out that Love is, and always has been waiting for us. All we need to do is choose it.
Album: Love Will Carry Us
This album, Love Will Carry Us, was inspired by the difficult process of realizing and facing increasing suffering and pain in my life. It seemed like the older I got, the more the trials and tribulations of the world weighed me down. Many factors contributed to this sense of doom, not the least of which was in raising a multiply disabled child. I was convinced that I was a victim of a cruel and dangerous world--that sacrifice and annihilation stalked me at every turn. As time passed, my suspicion and judgment of others increased, and my sense of peace and happiness decreased. I tried all the things available to ease the pain, but I only found myself deeper and deeper in my misery and isolation. I realized that it was not going to end well if I kept on the path I was taking. And so I began to entertain the idea that there must be a better way to approach this life--to make it meaningful, rewarding and redemptive. And in this newly found openness to finding another way, I slowly and, sometimes begrudgingly, began to realize that the only answer is to love. This album is about that journey from suffering to redemption.
TRACK 2: CASTAWAY
The protagonist prodigal son reflects on the depths of despair and hopelessness that has haunted his journey.
Track 3: The Only One
The prodigal son protagonist expresses his own self-loathing and feelings of inferiority. He knows he is on the wrong path, but he can't find it in himself to return to a healthy relationship with love at its core.
Track 4: Robin In the Snow
The prodigal son is lost, alienated and lonely. But in the midst of this hopelessness and despair, he still sees a faint light that promises a way out.
Track 5: You Left a Star
The protagonist prodigal son crosses paths with others who carry a light that points a way out of the darkness. He begins to focus on that light and the path it illuminates for him.
Track 6: Love Will Carry Us
Halfway through the album is the title track. It is a turning point, when the suffering prodigal son has a powerful and enlightening dream. In the dream he realizes that all of humanity suffers just as he has, and that the only way to find joy, peace and fulfillment is through love.
Track 7: Lift the Veil
The voice of Love reminds the prodigal son that she only waits for his return.
Track 8: The World's Fate
The prodigal son has begun to return home. He reflects on his life and shares the knowledge he has learned about how we make the world what we want it to be.
Track 9: Feed the Flame
The prodigal son progresses further on his path of awakening and glimpses the interrelatedness of all people and things. His Golden Rule becomes: "Treat others the way you want to treat yourself."
Track 10: No Longer
As the prodigal son protagonist approaches the end of his journey, he continues to see the barriers he has put between himself and Love. He expresses a prayer and intention to remove those barriers.
Track 11: Come Back To Me
The voice of Love longingly calls to the prodigal son to come back. Love assures him that nothing has, or can ever be changed.
