  1. Rocky Road

Lyrics

Way up in those hills I’m told there lies an old rocky road.
You may go if you’re so bold, but you’ll probably find it much too cold
Way up in those hills I’m told.
I’ve worked this land here all my life, I’ve got 13 kids—a hard-working wife.
Seen many folks with strength and might return from there all white with fright.
I’ve worked this land here all my life.
I’ll tell you everything I know about that road up in the snow,
So high a climb and long a road, you can’t take nothing if you go.
Well, I’ll tell you everything I know.

Let me tell you stranger that the odds are very low,
And they ain’t in your favor if you decide to go.
Those hills hold danger—you could freeze up in that snow.

Of this rocky road not much is known except that you must walk alone.
There is a signpost made of bone and it points a way away from home.
Of this rocky road not much is known.
Young and old and strong and weak, many have headed up that peak.
I’m not certain what you seek but if you return you shall be meek.
Young and old and strong and weak.

I must tell you stranger the well-known fact
That many souls have turned around and some did not come back.
I don’t know if they made it over or just got off that track.

This is all that I have learned from wounded souls who have returned.
From their own fire they’ve been so burned,
But I guess their pay is what they’ve earned.
That is all that I have learned.

Let me advise you stranger that if you go up there,
Commit yourself to follow through or live with us down here.
For once you’ve walked the rocky road, both worlds you cannot share.
